• I am an AtheistI do freely admit to being an atheist; however, most people in America have no idea what that means and have several misconceptions about atheism. Here are a few facts:
  
  Atheism is nothing more than an absence of belief in any gods. Not believing in something is not an act, believing in something is.
  
  Atheism is NOT a religion any more than “not playing football” is a sport.
  
  Atheism is NOT an organized body of people, there is no Council of Atheists telling us what to do, so there is no ‘ahteist position’ on any question except for one, “Do you believe in a god?”
  
  Atheism does not require an arrogant assumption of knowledge. Is it arrogant to withold belief in leprechauns until you look under every stump in Ireland? No, it is entirely reasonable to disbelief until you have sufficient evidence.
  
  Atheism is not a philosophy or world view. Most atheists have a world view, but that was obtained from somewhere else, not part of atheism itself.
